Feed The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Summary: After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle students will navigate Bee-Bot to pictures of the food the Caterpillar ate during the story.

Materials:

Bee-Bot & Bee-Bot mat

Caterpillar Jacket (included with Caterpillar Lesson Cards from Media Catalog)

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Story Cards (included with Caterpillar Lesson Cards from Media Catalog)

Procedure:

1. Prepare the Food cards underneath the Bee-Bot mat. Be careful not to block the path to a food item that is eaten during one of the first days of the week. A sample board layout is shown below. You could also divide the food out on several different mats if you want to break the class up into groups.

2. Put the Caterpillar jacket on Bee-Bot and display him.

3. Read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar to students.

4. Assign or have each student randomly choose a day of the week card. There is a total of 26 food items and 26 day of week cards.

5.  Each student will take turns programming Bee-Bot disguised as the The Very Hungry Caterpillar to "eat" a food item that corresponds to what he ate on their assigned day of the week in the story. They should be instructed that Bee-Bot may not "walk" over another square with food on his journey to the correct food.
