Science Resources - Secondary Level (RFA)

Aligned with the new Science Standards, offers concrete suggestions for integrating a variety of resources into the science curriculum.

Increasing relevance for my students in science

How do science topics and issues affect everyday people? How can I bring this topic to a local or personal level?

  • Example. Biology: Gene Editing Tool Described as Game Changer. A video news clip spotlighting a person suffering from Muscular Dystrophy and the potential for gene editing to change his life. From Gale Science in Context database.
  • Example, Chemistry: Drugs Downstream, a brief NY Times article about the practice of flushing medications down the toilet. From Gale Science in Context database
  • Example, Physical Science: Flipping Out. A scientist calculates the maximum number of flips a motocross rider could do based on the kinetic energy s/he has upon launching from the ramp. From Gale Science in Context database
  • Example, Earth Science: Hydrofracking: A Ground Shaking Report. Would you build a house in Oklahoma? How would the building codes be different, and would your insurance be higher? An article about how hydrofracking has resulted in increased seismic activity. From Today's Science database. Combine this article with the 2017 USGS Seismic Hazard Map
  • Example, local/environmental: What agreements have local people made with gas or windmill companies when leasing their land? Are these leases fair or were the people involved taken advantage of? Go to the Madison County Clerk's office to research local leases, which are considered public records.
  • Example, Chemistry. An experiment from Science Teacher publication: Corrosion in the Classroom: Two Science Experiments Help Students Understand the Effects of Corrosion on Steel. (Because, what CNY high school student hasn't encountered salt-induced car rust?) Find this publication in Gale Expanded Academic ASAP database. (pw=books)
